Intelligence
2008 – ‘Improving Tradecraft’
14 - 16 October, 2008
Holiday Inn,
Adelaide, SA
With a theme of ‘Improving Tradecraft’, this year’s
conference focuses on emerging practice issues, coupled with training,
and networking opportunities. Intelligence 2008 features plenary sessions
interspersed with streams of speakers and activities.
Plenary sessions include: the Opening Address on 15 October, a Keynote
Speaker for each day (15 and 16 October), and an Intelligence Career Management
Forum towards the end of 16 October. The Opening Address will be given
by Professor John McMillan, the Commonwealth Ombudsman, who will emphasize
the role of legislative and administrative mandates in developing and
applying new tradecraft.
Two well-respected observers on intelligence in Australia have also been
invited to provide Keynote Addresses. The Intelligence Career Management
Forum is a new initiative bringing together representatives from a number
of employers in the intelligence market to offer guidance on planning
an intelligence career.
Stream ‘A’ includes 15 speakers addressing five aspects of
the conference theme ‘Improving Tradecraft’. The five aspects
include: 1) Strategic Change; 2) Emerging Challenges; 3) Accessing Sources
of Information; 4) Employing Tools and Techniques; and 5) Developing Products
and Services. Speakers have been invited to present innovative and practical
approaches, offering intelligence professionals insights to improve their
tradecraft. At this stage of planning, we have speakers from compliance
agencies, law enforcement agencies, Department of Defence, the private
sector, as well as international perspectives from Canada, South Africa,
and New Zealand. The Call for Papers is on the AIPIO website.
Stream B includes a variety of more practical activities, including; two
training workshops conducted by Yanna Rider (Austhink) and Steve Longford
(New Intelligence), a ‘Knowledge Café’ facilitated
by Shawn Callahan (Anecdote), Poster Sessions by post-graduate students
undertaking research throughout Australia in intelligence-related fields,
and a series of short update briefings on AIPIO future plans and projects.
